Challenges
Hick Bros Civil needed to build roads and pads for the future foundations of the Harapaki wind farm. In this area, the materials have been a mixture of extremely poor ash overlying extremely hard limestone.
In addition to this, the ash is not reacting with cement/lime so we needed to use limestone for pavement subbase for roading.
Another challenge is the weather: extremely windy, humid and cold.

Solution
Tesmec proposed using the new Tesmec TRS1150 surface miner to extract the lime and to level the road to replace the excavator with a milling head or a rock breaker.

Result
The Tesmec TRS1150 surface miner has been performing extremely well on this project and has enabled us to extract a product that we can use as a subbase in all types of weather.
The Tesmec TRS1150 surface miner produced material for backfilling turbine foundations and hardstand subbase to achieve plate load tests.
Finally the machine is great for doing a final pass on hard rocky outcrops which can’t be trimmed with anything else.
Key facts:
-
+2,000t per day excavated in lime rock
-
Product for backfilling turbine foundations
-
The machine can be controlled by a 3D GPS system
