CIVIL CONSTRUCTION FOR KIWIRAIL - AUCKLAND

Client: KiwiRail

Location: Auckland

Service: Civil construction

Date started: October 2022

Scope of work

KiwiRail wanted to create a third line, starting with the Southern line to reduce intra-Auckland traffic. The first task was to lay a drain on each side of the future line to drain run-off water.

Solution

Marais Laying NZ is equipped with a 25t chain trencher, which allows us to dig, for this particular project, a trench measuring 0.90m deep and 0.45m wide.
Moreover, the Tesmec 885 has a loading belt and a conveyor in order to evacuate the excavated materials directly .

A truck is positioned in front of the trencher and moves these materials, once loaded.

Result

Marais Laying NZ, together with Downer to lay the drain, have been successful achieving 200m per day, understanding the trench, the laying, the backfilling, and the cleaning. The use of our chain trencher has greatly improved the daily linear but also facilitates the laying, as the excavated materials are evacuated immediately.

Key facts
  • 200m per day with the Tesmec 885 as opposed to 50m per day with the use of digger

  • A trench 0.90m deep and 0.45m wide

  • The use of our trencher allows us to carry on the slicing despite passing trains (good visibility and no rotation contrary to diggers)

  • Use of a GPS integrated into the machine
